It all started with an obscure CD, and lead me across the globe to Hyderabad, Sindh in Pakistan in search of Sindhi Folk Musicians for my short film Gul(flower). Here's the story of my journey.

Music of Gul

I knew from the start that for Gul(flower), I wanted a warm acoustic sound with a raw feel to it. Much like the visuals, that was the energy for this piece. After experimenting with different music on rough cuts of the film, I found the perfect match in Sindhi folk music on a cd by the Iqbal Jogi Ensemble which was called Passion for Pakistan. I knew that I did not want to use a prerecorded piece of music, because I felt that the timing of the piece should not be dictated by the music, as in a music video.

Creating Panel Cloth in 3DS Max

In this lesson I’ll go over the process of creating panel cloth. We’ll make a shalwar kameez, which is a traditional garment worn in Pakistan among other places. It presents some unique challenges above and beyond a tight fitted t-shirt, jeans or a simple dress. Remember, cloth isn’t easy. Know that it will take time and require lots of clean up when running shots.

The issue of human rights is of central interest in Gul(flower). I see the lack of human rights as the root of most social issues in the world. The power of storytelling lies in its ability to share experiences, educate and provoke thought. It is when people do not question the norm that human rights abuses go unchallenged.

An Environmental Film

Gul(flower) is about contrasts. Humanity’s impact on the environment is a strong theme of the film. Much of the visual development of the film came out of my surroundings. Here in Southern California, there are great swathes of natural beauty and industrial blight.
