Dancing in the Margins

Went to a dance performance called "Dancing in the Margins" and did these sketches. Lots of fun to try and catch people in motion. I didn't actually do any sketches of my two favorite performances, by Postnatyam Collective and Ana Maria Alvarez. They were so fast paced that I had to choose between watching or drawing...so I watched.

Alex Theatre LA Chamber Orchestra

Went to a fun performance by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra at the Alex Theatre courtesy of my pal Dan Read. I was just about to do a little study of the whole orchestra when the last song came to a dramatic end. I had two pencil lines down and poof. Gone. Next time...

Here again are dancers from Peshawar (dressed in red) and one mentally handicapped man from Bulleh Shah's Urs in Kasur. I tried to draw a few versions of one of the dancers to see what I could come up with.

Pakistani Faces

Decided to work on some faces. Still kinda quick, but I actually bothered to use a pencil to lay things out more first...suppose that could help my drawing a bit... So, just playing with layering color with the markers and trying to draw different heads. These are all people I met on my trip to Pakistan last summer.

Music Class and Show

Here's a green pen sketch of some musical instruments at my music teacher's place. Also, playing around with my new pocket sized sketchbook at the Madrid Theatre. Gotta get some kind of tiny light so I can draw in dark places like in the theatre, but for now, just the lobby.

Markers

I miss painting with watercolors, but lately all my drawing has been far too fast for it. I wanted something that I could paint with that wouldn't need to dry. So I picked up some thick prismacolor markers today. Here's some practice while watching tv. Yeah, I like 'em...

Taal and Karsh Kale

These are some sketches from Taal and Karsh Kale's performance at the Grand Avenue Festival a while back. Sitting directly in front of the stage, doing quick sketches made me kind of feel like I was part of the performance. Lots of fun to feed off of that energy and try to express it in lines! It's always interesting when someone notices you drawing them..and even better when they don't mind. Definately check them out.

Sidi Goma

Here are some sketches I did at a performance of Sidi Goma at their performance during the World Festival of Sacred Music. They are Indian descendents of Africans who migrated to India over 800 years ago. These particular ones were Sufi Muslims from Gujarat. It was a lot of fun doing really quick sketches of the performance, which was very playful and humerous at times as well as sincere in its devotion. Afterwards I spoke to some of the members. They were all very humble and appreciative. Interesting to see the similarities to Sufi culture I saw in Kasur, Pakistan at Bulleh Shah's Urs this past summer.

The beginning...

Well, I'm going to give this blog stuff a shot. I figure it should be a nice way to show my friends what kind of art I've been creating lately.

I'll start off with his quick pastel sketch from a weekly drawing class I used to go to at my last job. This particular day the model didn't show up, so..whatcha gonna do..the artists took turns filling the role.
